Introduction to Microscopy and Microscope

The history of microbiology will be incomplete without first mentioning the discovery and development of the microscope. Microscopes are indispensable tools for studying microorganisms because without the invention of microscopes man will find it difficult to see microbes (which are microscopic in nature and are too small to be seen with the naked or unaided […]

Colonial morphology of microorganisms

Microorganisms produce definite patterns on culture media plates as they grow and divide. These specific patterns (inclusive of shapes and sizes) also aid in the preliminary identification of the organisms for further characterization. Colonial morphology is the size, shape, colour, texture and the general structure of an individual colony of a particular microorganism (in this

Introduction to (Medical) Bacteriology

Medical Bacteriologyis a branch of medical microbiology that is concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacterial pathogens. It is simply the study of bacteria that are of medical importance i.e. that cause diseases in human beings and animals. Medical bacteriology is the study of the interactions between pathogenic bacteria

Introduction to Industrial Microbiology

Microorganisms have played significant roles over the years in the alleviation of diseases and infections in man, animals and plants. Most of the drugs and/or antimicrobial agents used to keep infectious microbes at bay and even vaccines used for vaccination exercises are naturally sourced from microorganisms. However, microbes also play significant roles in helping to

Centrifuge

Centrifuge is an instrument is used to separate suspensions or particulate matter in a liquid based on their different sedimentation properties or densities. The centrifuge machine is generally used in the microbiology laboratory to sediment or separate different macromolecules (especially particulate matter) in a solution. Liquid specimens such as urine and blood can be spinned
